What's new in ocean sailing? "Class 9.50"
Ocean sailing and racing, is not just for the rich anymore.
Small communities or friends can pool resources and enter into the exciting world of, " International Ocean Racing." Campaigning an ocean racer in the USA has traditional been rare opportunity. Mostly reserved for that of privilege wealth, or extremely passionate about working with the sea. I believe that we all are possessed by the sea, some more than others.
The advancement of boat design in the world, moves forward regardless of the price of a barrel of oil. Traveling farther and faster without burning fossil fuels, is always going to be news worthy. Sea travel to me is the most adventuress and exciting methods of travel.
Hopefully, this blog will help bring to light, the practical nature of, "Ocean Flight".
We will discuss and study contemporary yacht design, modern boatbuilding, and marine systems for the 2100 century. Including, the renewable energy and green powering technologies, for are digital lifestyles.
A sailing vessel is the perfect platform for sharing and demonstrating low carbon burning energy systems, new technology, and communication tools. Independent power generation for small habitats in remote locations, are well tested out at sea in the confines of a small vessel. A vessel that works with the wind, flows with water, and is powered by the sun, is a joy to behold, and an artifact for humanity in the 21 century.
The goal is to end up building boats within the rules of the, " class 9.50 design". This vessel is small enough to be attainable. Large enough to be a safe ocean going vessel. Safe enough to weather the stormy North Pacific. A fast enough vessel to ride with or avoid the weather fronts. A tuff enough vessel to punch into a storm, survive a capsize, pitch pole, keel loss, or loosing the rig. A easy sailing vessel to be sailed solo if desired. A vessel with enough capacity to carry supplies, modern navigation tools, and safety gear for regular and routine ocean crossings.
Sailing the seas has been around for a while. My goal is to not reinvent the wheel so to speak. I have decided to base this project on a new ocean racing class of sailboat, simply called, "Class 9.50"
Class 9.50 is about 30 feet over all. I remember reading a book many years ago called the, "The Sailing Farm" . It was about living aboard a 30 foot sail boat, growing sprouts, living off the sea, traveling lightly, ext..
This project is more about fast efficient sail boat design. By promoting and working within the new international racing 9.50 class, we will farther develop the sport and art of sailing in America.
The 9.50 meter or 30 foot vessel size, meets my minimal size requirements as well for this project. My intention is to focus mostly on the vessel, gear, and systems for safe fast ocean sailing. Nutrition is a given.
The fun and rewarding benefits of this blog,
1) Promote Adventure Ocean Sailing and Racing.
2) Share modern navel boat design, and construction methods.
3) Educate about Renewable Energy Systems, green products, communication, and navigation gear for the 21 first century.
4) Connecting with SEA WEED ORG's., SEA PEOPLE, coastal towns, schools, science and environmental communities.
5) Building, outfitting, and sailing a Class 9.50 vessel.
6) Help create peace, green jobs, international good will, and sports travel in are coastal communities.
